  • Senator Wary of Single-Payer Healthcare System
    Reported by: RNS

    Sunday, May 17, 2009 @10:11am CDT

The U.S. Senate Minority Leader is a bit wary of possible changes to healthcare in the country.

On "Fox News Sunday," Republican Mitch McConnell acknowledged changes need to be made to the current system but said a single-payer approach with a national insurance system is not the right way to proceed.

He said private insurers would not be able to compete with a government option, and that he believes there would be "a number of Democrats that would not support a government plan."

McConnell warned doing so would result in, quote "massive tax increases across the board on a whole lot of people" to raise the needed $600-billion to pay for it.

He said whether or not there is a huge fight in the Senate over healthcare changes depends on what is proposed by the Obama administration.

McConnell said Republicans could get on board with plans to lower the number of uninsured Americans so long as the government does not get between people and their doctors.
