Reported by: Courtney Collins, KARK 4 News Monday, Jul 28, 2008 @03:59pm CDT Some people are perfectly happy with the standard pets like cats and dogs or birds and fish.
But a Russellville pet owner prefers something a little different. And that's exactly what she got recently when her pet bearded dragon had a two-headed offspring. If someone said, "There's a two headed dragon living in my house," would you believe them? Well, if you're talking to Russellville native Jamie Hough you can rest assured, she's telling the truth. You'd never guess it when you walk into Jamie's perfectly kept Russellville home, but there's a reptile room upstairs that would turn most zoo's green with envy. But it's her two-month old bearded dragon that will really knock your socks off. Jamie Hough's upstairs room is home to all things scaly. She's got bearded dragons, monitors, even pythons, and they're all multiplying. "I've always been interested in reptiles and about 4 years ago we got our first bearded dragon and they're addictive, so we've been collecting reptiles ever since then," Hough says. Jamie even breeds lobster roaches, to save money on reptile food. And while all this may seem foreign to the average person, Jamie's one-in-a-million pet is Bert and Ernie, a two-headed, bearded dragon. "She's very healthy and she eats well and named her Bert and Ernie for obvious reasons, 'cause it's a duo," Hough says. When she began to hatch two months ago, Jamie noticed she was having a tough time breaking free from her egg. "We decided to go ahead and intervene and cut the egg and when we did, a second head popped out. The second head had been caught inside the egg and that's why she wasn't hatching so I almost fell to the floor in disbelief," Hough says. And she hasn't exactly recovered. Because Jamie has been interested in the reptile world for years, she knows just how rare a living, breathing two-headed bearded dragon is. And while she wants to raise Bert and Ernie on her own awhile longer, she doesn't plan to keep her forever. "We've talked about possibly leasing her to a zoo or museum because I'd like to share her with the rest of the world," says Hough. |
