Reported by: Pete Thompson, KARK 4 News Friday, Jun 27, 2008 @05:24pm CDT Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and Pulaski County Clerk Pat O’Brien have reached an aggreement regarding private information posted on the internet. O'Brien will now take real estate documents off the county website after talks with McDaniel. The Pulaski County Clerk has put two million public records on-line and some of those documents contain social security numbers. Thousands of those documents contain social security numbers which can make people a target for identity theft. "Social security numbers in public documents have been a concern for every person that's kept records since this entire issue came up," says Pulaski County Clerk Pat O’Brien. O’Brien made the decision to put those records on-line six months ago. While aware of the concerns, he says public information should be available to everyone… and that he's acting within the law. (Click here to tell us what you think.) "I'm a supporter of the freedom of information act... these are the public's records," he says. Some say the on-line access makes them a target for identity scams. "There is a huge difference between keeping those documents in the courthouse and putting them on the world-wide web," says Chris Dimon. Dimon is an architect in North Little Rock. He says he was shocked when he found his personal information on-line. "Anybody on the planet can sit there and cross through this data,” he says, “It's a treasure chest of data." But O'Brien says his office is not the one that's putting the social security numbers onto these documents. "My response is that have these people talked to law enforcement agencies that put numbers in public records... Have they talked to the title companies...the mortgage companies, the banks and all of these entities?," he says. "It goes past him,” says Dimon, “It's not truly his fault... but in my opinion I'm angry at him because he's allowing it to happen." |
