Wednesday, Apr 29, 2009 @07:10pm CDT Reported by: KARK 4 News A standoff at a Hot Springs motel ends peacefully Wednesday afternoon after a suspect is taken into custody without incident. Authorities say William S. Goodman, 37, threatened to cause harm to four locations in the Hot Springs area Wednesday. That led to an afternoon long standoff at the Fountain Motel on Central Avenue. The situation began around 11:30 Wednesday morning when concerns that Goodman was armed led authorities to shutdown a college campus and place a lockdown on Mountain Pine schools. By the afternoon, the Garland County courthouse was also evacuated and workers at the Hot Springs Police Department were moved upstairs. It's believed Goodman may need a psychiatric evaluation. The motel standoff with Goodman and Garland County Sheriff's deputies began around 2:30. The incident first affected the National Park Community College campus after the Sheriff's Office notified school officials of a potential threat involving Goodman, who was believed to be heading towards campus. The Sheriff's Office tells KARK 4 news the evacuation was a precaution because Goodman has a commitment order for mental help. By two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the Garland County courthouse had also been evacuated and workers at the Hot Springs Police Department moved to an upper floor. Authorities say those buildings were placed on alert because Goodman has made threats against them in the past. At NPCC, an immediate evacuation was put in place via the All-Call system and the entire campus was emptied by noon. A building by building search followed and the lockdown remained in place. Deputies had their guns drawn and surrounded the Fountain Motel where Goodman was holed up inside. After several hours, Goodman was taken into police custody. No one was injured during the standoff.
