  • Attorney General Speaks Out on West Memphis 3
Reported by: Cecillea Pond-Mayo, KARK 4 News

    Wednesday, Jan 16, 2008 @06:27pm CST

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says there is no new DNA evidence that he believes should exonerate the West Memphis 3. “I’m growing increasingly frustrated by what I see as a misleading press campaign to suggest there’s new DNA evidence that in someway exonerates these 3 boys,” McDaniel said. Attorneys for Damien Echols filed a report in court 2 months ago, stating DNA from one of the victim’s stepfather was found on a shoe string which was used to tie the victims. Attorneys also claim no DNA has been found linking the 3 defendants to the crime scene. Attorneys are asking for a new trial. Echols is on death row for the 1994 murder of three young boys. 2 other men are serving life sentences. McDaniel claims that new DNA did not match the victim’s stepfather, only that it is consistent. Echols attorneys responded saying, “We agree that the new evidence unearthed so far does not conclusively prove the identity of the persons who actually committed these heinous crimes, but we believe that is not the legal standard which must be met to free the defendants.”
