Reported by: Kim Betton, KARK 4 News Wednesday, Dec 19, 2007 @06:09pm CST "Free the West Memphis 3" was the cry heard in Little Rock Wednesday on steps of the Arkansas State Capitol. Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie chicks, came to town to help spread the word. Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin were convicted for killing three boys in 1993. We caught up with Maines right after the event.
"Do you feel comfortable about it." "I feel like they listened to us and I feel like they are open to finding out the truth." "Who did you talk to? No the Gov. was not in there. Some of his council and staff and spokesman." "What about other members of the dixie chicks do they support you? "They're in Texas and I'm in L.A. I know they support me in what I am passionate about." "I don't know that the mission is accomplished until these guys are out of jail. I just say to everyone get motivated." Parents of the victims.. were not at Wednesday's rally.. but we do have comments from three of them. Mark Byers and Pam Hobbs believe the wrong people are behind bars. On the other hand Pam's ex-husband, Terry Hobbs...feels justice has been served and that echols and the others should stay locked up. in fact he says quote "Today's rally was a waste of time." The defense for Echols plans to present new DNA in a Jonesboro circuit court in the next few months. Those in opposition believe the rally and new evidence will not make a difference and the West Memphis 3 should remain behind bars. |
