  • Rally at State Capitol for West Memphis Three
Reported by: Mallory Hardin, KARK 4 News

    Wednesday, Dec 19, 2007 @11:20am CST

It's been 14 years since three young boys were brutally murdered in West Memphis.  But, the case is still fresh for supporters of the three men, they believe were wrongfully convicted of their murder, better known as the West Memphis Three.

It's been more than a decade since the West Memphis Three were convicted, but the attention brought from several celebrities including Johny Depp, Jack Black, Eddie Vetter of Pearl Jam,

and Winona Ryder have kept the nation aware.

The most recent celebrity supporter has come from lead singer of the Dixie Chicks Natalie Manes, after watching the HBO documentary about the West Memphis Three.

"When she saw it, she assumed the 3 young men were set free, when she found out they weren't she was just appalled," Rally Coordinator Kathy Peck said.

Now she, along with an estimated one thousand supporters will join together on the steps of the state capitol, not to protest, but to rally together.

"We just want to expedite things. Either extradite these 3 men based on DNA evidence and forensics of give them new and speedy trial," Peck said.

Supporters will be passing out letters, along with 2,000 signatures on a petition...asking lawmakers to free the West Memphis Three.  But how much of an impact can celebrity support and petitions make?

"The Attorney Generals office does not make decisions based on petitions and protests; we base our action on the law and evidence," Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said.

Regardless, supporters plan to rally to get their attention, and organizers say they hope the national attention will draw Arkansans to support the cause.

"It's time for Arkansans to speak out, we've been fairly quiet and that's what Arkansas taking action is about, raising awareness," Peck said.

Larry King Live will be shooting at Wednesday's event, and Wednesday night they'll be airing a one hour special on the West Memphis Three.
