  • Weekend Party Could Affect Salt Bowl
Reported by: KARK 4 News Staff

    Thursday, Aug 30, 2007 @05:26pm CDT

It's expected over 20,000 people will crowd into War Memorial Friday night to watch two high school rival teams on the field.
The Salt Bowl is one of the biggest events for Saline County and now KARK 4 News has learned a party involving underage drinking could affect Friday night's roster.
Benton high school football players hit the practice field the afternoon before the big game.
There's signs all over town promoting the Salt Bowl and everyone on the street knows the stakes
"It's always been a big game, but really big since Bryant has become good at football," explains Benton resident, Glen Hart.
But while Benton players get in their last few throws the district continues to investigate what took place Saturday night.
The sheriff's office said they responded to a noise complaint when they found 60 -80 people at a Saline county house...most underage and drinking. About 30 people ran off into the woods.
"He used a portable breathalyser determined about 21 of them had alcohol in their system," explains Saline County Sheriff's Department Capt. Jason Massey.
Captain Massey says because they weren't caught with a drink in hand the intoxicated youths were taken to the sheriff's department where they called their parents.
Since then the school has been trying to figure out how many of those teens were Benton students involved in extra curricular activities
"Each individual's activity may have a rule of conduct that students must adhere to," explains Benton Superintendent, Tony Prothro.
It's possible those students, even players and cheerleaders, expected to take the field Friday could be suspended from their athletic activities..
The Superintendent refuses to tell how many could be involved or which sports could impacted citing privacy concerns.
Records for attendance at high school football games have been broken at War Memorial for the annual Salt Bowl. Dr. Prothro says he understands the importance of this game to players and fans, but also knows he needs to be fair.
"We can't base actions that may be taken upon timing or hype around Salt Bowl such as that," adds Prothro.
The sheriff's office says no parents of the minors knew about or contributed to the party.
