Melissa Simas
After more than two years co-anchoring KARK 4 Today, Melissa moved in December 2008 to co-anchoring KARK 4 News at 10:00. Melissa made the Natural State home in 2002. She got her first on-air job as a reporter at KAIT in Jonesboro. Shortly thereafter, she joined the KARK Team. In addition to solid news reporting skills that have earned her two Associated Press Awards, Melissa’s intelligence and warm personality have endeared her to viewers in Central Arkansas. Melissa is a native New Englander from Taunton, Massachusetts. Most people don't realize her first language was Portuguese. Half of her family still lives in Europe today. As a child, watching the news was one of Melissa's least favorite things to do. Her dad made her watch it though, and little did she know it would one day become her career ambition. Melissa graduated from Boston University in 2000, with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and a minor in Political Science. In Boston, she held internships at New England Cable News, WABU TV, and she worked briefly for NewsProNet.com, a production company. One of the most fulfilling times of Melissa's life came when she spent a semester as a Washington, D.C., intern. There she worked for a political talk show on MSNBC. Melissa's love for politics blossomed, as she learned the workings of the Beltway. It was then she realized journalism was the thing for her. Melissa's semester experience later landed her a job at MSNBC Headquarters, as a production assistant on "Hardball with Chris Matthews." While there she contributed to some major news stories, including the 2000 presidential recount, and the events surrounding September 11th. Her work was later acknowledged by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her contribution to the reporting of that moment in history.
