Reported by: Lauren Lea, KARK 4 News Saturday, Nov 21, 2009 @05:15pm CST More than 1,500 Arkansans lined up for free health care in downtown Little Rock Saturday.
The National Association of Free Clinics organized the C.A.R.E. or "Communities are Responding Everyday" clinic. Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter helped organize the nonpartisan event. Uninsured Arkansans from 6 to 65 received care. Kristina Cox visited the clinic Saturday with her six-year-old daughter Cheyenne. Cox suffers from severe asthma but had not seen a doctor in more than seven years. Her husband is disabled and covered by Medicaid and her children are covered by AR Kids First. She works at a day care center and makes minimum wage. She had to drop her insurance after costs kept rising. "It's stressful," she says. Her asthma has only gotten worse and she does everything she can to stay well. "When I found out I was pregnant with my son, I got real sick and I had to go to the emergency room. I am trying to pay that bill off now." NAFC reports 83 percent of the patients who go to free clinics are employed and have jobs but don't have insurance. About 45 million Americans are not insured, including 450,000 Arkansans. The next free clinic will be in Kansas City, Missouri Dec. 9-10. |
