Reported by: Lauryn Lax, KARK 4 News Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 @02:07pm CST First, reduce, reuse and recycle. Buy only as much as you need and buy food where the packaging can be recycled.
Also buy and eat locally grown food. Make your meal organic-choosing non-processed and whole foods, such as fresh green beans, real cranberries, and non-canned sweet potatoes. Organic produce and grains are grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and organic meat is produced without antibiotics or artificial hormones. Avoid plastic dishes and paper napkins. Sure it's easy cleanup, but the china and cloth napkins will provide both class and an eco-friendly dining experience. Celebrate at home to better air quality and keep you from using auto and plane fuel. Invite your neighbors to encourage them to do the same and come together in the process. If travel is a must, suggest carpooling. Do something fun! Instead of becoming a couch potato, using electricity for TV all day, take advantage of time with loved ones. Go outside for a jog. Play football in the front yard. Take the dogs on a walk. Or simply sit on the front porch or living room and catch up on each others' lives. Take the day to plant a tree, make a family memory and give back to the environment. Over the years to come, watch it grow and mark your Thanksgiving holidays. Also, get crafty. Consider making your own eco-friendly decorations. Use construction paper to make harvest decor, then recycle the paper. Make pinecone turkeys or dried leaf placemats. Or use fresh flowers and greenery to spruce things up. Last, but not least, donate leftover food to a shelter, soup kitchen or foodbank. |
