  • Jericho Fire Chief Recovering After Being Shot by Polic...

    Sunday, Sep 6, 2009 @01:11pm CDT

(Jericho, AR) The Jericho, AR volunteer fire chief is recovering after being shot allegedly by a Jericho police officer. This all happened in the town of 184 people last week after an argument over a traffic ticket. The Crittenden Co., AR sheriff’s department is investigating. Don Payne’s wife, Brenda says her husband wasn’t the only one upset over the tickets. "The officer was really upset because the judge was throwing a lot of the tickets out. Because she was looking at them and knowing they weren't right." Payne says on last Thursday evening, her husband Don got into a disagreement with the Jericho officer over their son’s ticket which the judge dismissed. Payne says the officer told another cop to shot her husband. Payne says, "He was shot in the back, and the bullet got caught in his hip bone." He has since undergone five hours of surgery. Since the incident a number of traffic tickets have been thrown out by the judge and an investigation into the town’s ticket writing practices is underway. People who live in the town are now using the publicity over the shooting to speak out, saying the police department is corrupt and they are looking forward to the investigation.
