Public Enemies is a brilliant crime epic and John Dillinger biopic from director Michael Mann.
Set during the Great Depression this movie focuses on the charismatic bank robber and "public enemy number one" John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), the G-Man assigned to bring Dillinger to justice. Public Enemies shines during the bank robbery scenes with gunfire so loud, it sent shivers down my spine. Johnny Depp displays great versatility as Public Enemies is a bit of a departure from his past roles. To watch Johnny's face go through all the emotions he feels throughout the movie is simply incredible. Depp captures the "celebrity gangster" Dillinger with confidence and as a man who always lived in the moment with little or no regard to what tomorrow may bring. Bale was not developed enough for my taste. His accent was great and he was very believable, but I would have liked to see more time spent on his character than say Baby Face Nelson. One of the highlights of Public Enemies for me was when Dillinger was in a movie theater watching a gangster film starring Clark Gable. During the part when Gable said, "I would rather die than go to prison", you could feel a real connection between the actor on the screen playing the "bad guy" and real gangster John Dillinger. We really enjoyed Public Enemies and highly recommend this movie
