Southern Vampire SeriesSouthern Vampire Series
If you are looking for a fun summer read you might try Arkansas resident Charlaine Harris' southern vampire series which is the basis for the popular HBO series True Blood. The series heroine is Sookie Stackhouse who discovers that her own supernatural abilities are not so strange when faced with vampires going public to the world along with a gradual discovery that there are many supernatural beings still in the closet but living among normal humans. The books are filled with fantasy, humor, mystery, action & romance. They are all very entertaining reading. They should definitely be read in order and try not to skip the books even if you are watching the series on TV. There are some really fun characters in the books that do not make it to the TV show, Bubba in particular(you have to read to find out which famous person Bubba the vampire is). Reading the books will clue you in on some inside jokes in the TV series like the panther on Jason's hat. Though the books are basically formula driven they are so filled with fun surprises that you really don't care.
The most recent addition to the series is Dead and Gone confirms my long suspicion that Sookie's parents did not exactly suffer the normal flash flood drowning originally described. There is a nice little mystery as usual. Another supernatural group goes public. Sookie is torn between her love of two vampires. Personally I think Bill Compton is the one for her. There is a war going on between two factions of yet another supernatural group that puts Sookie in grave danger. As with the rest of the series it is a fun read that leaves you craving more.
