  • Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA, also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease), is a group of diseases and mechanical abnormalities entailing degradation of joints, including articular cartilage and the subchondral bone next to it. In OA, a variety of potential forces—hereditary, developmental, metabolic, and mechanical—may initiate processes leading to loss of cartilage -- a strong protein matrix that lubricates and cushions the joints. The patient increasingly experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Due to decreased movement because of the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax.

    Symptoms:
    *joint pain
    *tenderness
    *stiffness
    *inflammation
    *creaking, and locking of joints.

    Treatment:
    *weight control
    *appropriate rest
    *exercise
*use of mechanical support devices (knee braces, walker, cane)
*proper advice from medical doctors, physical therapists or occupational therapist
*pain relief medication prescribed by your doctor
    *physical therapy

If you or a loved one is suffering from Osteoarthritis, talk to your doctor about treatment options.
