Has a movie adaptation of a book ever been better than the book?

In my mind I say yes but it is very rare. The one that stands out to me is The Shining originally a Stephen King novel. I love Stephen King but the tension in the movie and the elements that were left out to me made the movie better than the book and more frightening. It did not hurt to have Jack Nicholson in the lead.
Rebecca is another fantastic adaptation. I'm not sure I could say it was better than the book but it is a brilliant movie. It had a perfect cast and the master of suspense at the helm. You cannot get much better than the group involved in making this movie.
While cut parts may have benefited The Shining usually missing pieces are what hurts an adaptation. I know in most if a not all cases parts of a book will be left out mainly because movies are not 5 or 6 hours long. While I did enjoy the adaptation of Twilight I did miss the build up of the romance. That tension was what I enjoyed most about the book and for those who just went to see the movie and did not read it was rather sad that they missed it.  There are times with the Harry Potter series I feel that too. I cannot help but miss some of the little nuances and sidelines from the books that are left out of the movies. In the recent Angels and Demons a fairly huge part of the book was cut from the movie. It eliminated some the tension and ties between the lead characters and while the movie was enjoyable without it. I have to wonder if I would have liked it better or felt more connected to it if it had stayed true to the book.
To be fair to movies, how can a movie be better than our own imagination? When we read we use it. We create the perfect Edward for us and then when we see a living person in the role that may not quite match our picture, well it is a bit of a let down. I know I sometimes even cast a book in my head as I am reading it. For me Lestat in Anne Rice's vampire series always conjured young Sting so when Tom Cruise got the part I was a bit horrified. Casting, visual effects, makeup, and even costume design can turn a movie adaptation into a let down because of our own wonderful imaginations.
So why do we go to the movie, to see the train wreck, to change our view of a book? Maybe just to see someone else's take on something we love and have something fun to discuss over coffee with our friends. I know I will keep reading, keep imagining and keep going to the movies
