  • Arkansas Gets 'F' in Mental Healthcare
Reported by: Courtney Collins, KARK 4 News

    Thursday, Mar 12, 2009 @04:40pm CDT

We didn't get a good grade last time around, and Arkansas has fallen even further when graded on adult mental healthcare.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness gave the country an average grade of 'D.'

Arkansas was given an 'F' along with only 5 other states.

We were graded on many different criteria, including access to medication, housing and education.

But local mental health advocates say that's just the start.

"In times of crisis, we know that individuals need hospitalization on emergency services and right now, we just aren't able to provide those or we don't provide them in our state,” says N.A.M.I. Director Kim Arnold.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI, one in four people suffer from mental illness.

It's also the leading cause of disability in the U.S.
