We have heard from some viewers indicating they are having problems picking up channel 4 the analog transmitter was turned off.
We hope to address the most common issues we have seen which are preventing viewers from seeing KARK-DT. Here are some basic things everyone needs to know about digital reception. 1. Digital reception is not snowy. If you have a snowy or grainy picture, you are still looking at an analog signal. Digital has three states of reception for the most part. 1. The picture is perfect. 2. The picture is perfect some of the time and pixilates or freezes some of the time. This is caused by a weak signal into the set top box or digital tv. 3. No picture at all. (black screen) This is caused by low signal or no signal into the set top box or digital tv. 2. In the Little Rock Market, most of the digital signals are on UHF not VHF. So if you have a VHF only antenna, you will not be able to pick up Digital TV. Here are the channel assignments for the Little Rock market. Almost all of these stations except PBS and KASN are located on top of Shinall Mountain in West Little Rock. Affiliate Analog Channel Digital Channel PBS 2 7 KARK (NBC) 4 32 KATV (ABC) 7 22 KTHV (CBS) 11 12 KLRT (FOX) 16 30 KVTN 25 24 KASN 38 39 KARZ (MYNET) 42 44 3. Another area of confusion is with antennas. If you currently get analog UHF signals over the air with an antenna, that antenna should work fine for digital. There is no need to purchase another antenna. The exception to this is if you use rabbit ears. Rabbit ears are not very good antennas and in most cases are not very successful in receiving a usable Digital signal. Rabbit ears pick up the signal from all directions and this causes the set top box or digital tv to get errors while trying to decode the digital signal being sent to your home. These errors result in freezing or blocky pictures. Now that we know the basics, lets get started on setting up you system. 1. Connect the set top box’s “output to tv” to your tv’s “antenna input”. 2. Connect the cable from you antenna to the set top box’s “antenna input”. 3. Turn on your tv and set the channel to 3. Now turn on your set top box. You should see some type signal from the set top box. If not, change the tv’s channel to channel 4 and look for the signal. If you see snow, you are not looking at the right channel. 4. Perform a channel scan on the set top box. This is done in the setup menu. If this is the first time you have turned on the set top box, it will normally come up for you. However, if this is not the first time you have turned on the set top box, then you will have to access it through the menus. Please consult your user manual which came with your set top box for accessing the setup screen. 5. Perform a channel scan. 6. Once the channel scan is complete, check to see if you have all of the channels by entering in the old analog channel number. For example to view channel 4, you would enter 4.1 or 4-1 depending on your set top box. If you have the channels you are looking for, your are finished. If you are missing some channels or your reception is not good and your picture is freezing or having other issues. You need to adjust your antenna. Adjusting your antenna is easier than ever before with digital tv. This is because there is a signal strength meter built into your set top box to help you aim your antenna. Again consult your set top box’s manual to locate which menu the signal meter is in. once you have located the signal strength meter, adjust your antenna until the meter reads the highest number or says the quality is the best. (some set top boxes do not read out numbers but merely give the signal quality as either Good, Ok and bad). *** After you have adjusted you antenna, perform another channel scan. *** If some of your channels have disappeared, then you need to move your antenna back towards the original position and rescan for channels. This must be repeated until you can receive all of the channels you want to receive. |
