4:13 Dream
The Cure I admit it proudly. I am a Cure fan and have been for over 20 years. It cannot be denied that music history will see them as one of the most important and influential bands in alternative and modern rock. Everyone from Tool to Kings of Leon sites The Cure as an influence on their music. That being said I have not been a fan the previous two or three albums and I have always wondered why their studio records even the great ones like Head on the Door, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration have never really captured the energy and heaviness of their live show. I do think a band should be better live than on a recording, after all we pay more to see them live than to buy a CD, but I always felt The Cure might be a little misunderstood or judged as light because of their most popular songs and recordings. While I love their lighter songs like "Just Like Heaven" and "Pictures of You" there is most definitely another side to Robert Smith and his band and while there are some dark angry songs on albums such as Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me they don't capture how heavy, how dark and how high energy The Cure can be live. Lets put it this way The Cure got grungy long before Nirvana. The new album finally captures some of that energy and some of that darkness while still being very slick and well produced. Smith and crew are clearly writing to please no one but themselves these days but with this venture I think those who appreciate them will enjoy it just as much as the band enjoyed writing it and putting it together. Some songs are a bit of a throw back to early Cure but are of course more mature and there are some beautiful long intros that create that familiar wall of sound. As always the music has many facets and details. It is not simple. It is as complex and creative as it's mastermind. Several of the songs capture the rock sound that I have grown to appreciate from their live shows which sell out in minutes for a reason. Porl Thompson (15 years in the band) is back on this record after being out of the band for a while to pursue such projects as playing rhythm guitar on tour with Robert Plant & Jimmy Paige. The current drummer, Jason Cooper, has been with The Cure for several albums (13 years) and really stands out on this one as the talent he is. Simon Gallup (29 years in the band) is there as he almost always has been and solid as ever on bass. Robert Smith (32 years in the band) said the music just poured out of him in the studio and that he was in a good place for this record and it certainly shows. Way to go Robert! It is safe to go buy a Cure record again! Hurray good new music from a great band! Click here to visit the music forums |
