Each of us, at some point in our lives, makes a decision to try to eat healthier foods. Here are some tips to help you to make good decisions when it comes to eating right. Choose many different healthy foods. Pick those that are lower in cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat (mostly found in foods that come from animals) and trans fatty acids (found in some processed foods, margarine, and shortenings). Also, avoid "empty calories" as much as you can. These are foods and drinks with a lot of calories, but not many nutrients-for example, chips, cookies, sodas, and alcohol. Instead, choose to eat more fruits, vegetables, and try to include more seafood in your diet. Cut back on salt. Instead, try adding spices, herbs, and lemon juice to add flavor to your food. And count those calories. Calories are a way to measure the energy you get from food. If you eat more calories than your body needs, you could gain weight. Read the labels on packaged foods where calorie counts are listed. Still need help? Make an appointment and discuss weight loss options with your family doctor.
