  • Depression: Self-help for Seniors

Helpful Tips for Seniors with Depression
As we age, there are many factors that can cause depression. Some of the things that cause depression in seniors include isolation, lack of mobility, chronic pain, retirement, loss of a loved one, anxiety, and even certain medications. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to take control of your life and fight depression.

    Self-help for Seniors:

    • Get out of the house - Don't stay cooped up inside all day. Take a walk in the park, have lunch with friends, join a bowling league, or perhaps an afternoon in the garden.
    • Visit with family and friends - Cut back on your time alone. If you are unable to get out and socialize, invite friends and family to your place. You can also keep in touch through emails or on the phone.
    • Keep doing things you love: Don't stop doing the little things that bring you joy. Whether you enjoy golf, playing a musical instrument, or reading a good book, you should continue to do the things that make you smile.
    • Volunteer your time - If you want to feel better about yourself, try helping others. It will help you to regain perspective and give you a sense of purpose.
    • Take care of a pet - Don't be alone. Get a pet to keep you company.
    • Keep your mind sharp - Reading a good book, solving crossword puzzles, or using the computer can help you stay focused and sharp through the best years of your life.
    • Eat a healthy diet - Make the right choices when it comes to your diet. Eat healthy foods that provide energy and nourishment.
    • Learn something new - Pick up a new skill that you've always wanted to learn. Learning new things will help spark your creativity and imagination. It can also give you a sense of accomplishment and help to keep you focused mentally.
    • Exercise - Even if you are limited by an illness or disability, there are several safe exercises you can do to keep you in shape and boost your mood. Consult your doctor for an exercise program that is right for you.
    • Laughter -A day without laughter is a wasted day. Enjoy jokes and humorous stories with a loved one, read a funny book, or watch a funny show. Nothing can boost your mood like a good laugh.
