Maze procedure: A therapeutic
procedure that isolates a part of the heart that is responsible for the
origination of an arrhythmia. In a surgical maze procedure, a surgeon incises a
line or lines in the cardiac tissue to create a barrier between the source of an
arrhythmia and the rest of the heart. In a catheter maze procedure, a physician
(most often an electrophysiologist) "burns" a line or lines in a heart chamber
with a radiofrequency therapeutic catheter.
