State of Arkansas Paid Nearly $4M in 2012 Crime Victim Reparations

The State of Arkansas has paid millions of dollars in crime victim reparations over the last year.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced today that nearly $4 million in reparations were awarded in 2012 to victims of violent crime in Arkansas by the state's Crime Victims Reparations Board.
The board awarded $3,930,971.02 in a total of 1,992 cases last year. The money is awarded to crime victims through the Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Program administered by the Attorney General's Office.
"Last year, crime victims received almost $4 million in tangible relief to help offset expenses associated with the crimes perpetrated against them," McDaniel said. "This is a worthwhile resource for Arkansans who are eligible, and I encourage Arkansans to contact our office if they need assistance."
Victims of violent crime are eligible for compensation from the Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Program to pay for their unexpected expenses, including medical treatment and mental health counseling. Compensation may also be provided to cover lost wages, replacement services and funeral expenses.
The Crime Victims Reparations Board determines which claims are eligible for payment and how much money will be awarded to each claimant. Most awards are limited to $10,000 or less. Victims receiving catastrophic injuries resulting in total and permanent disability may receive awards as high as $25,000.
The Arkansas Legislature created the Crime Victims Reparations Program in 1987, and the program is funded by court costs and fees. Additional funding comes from fines imposed on convicted criminals.
In the month of December, the board awarded $239,771.86 in 123 cases, with additional expenses paid in six cases.
Members of the Crime Victims Reparations Board are: Dr. Janice Church of Little Rock, Colleen Nick of Alma, Redious Yancy of North Little Rock, Louis Jones of Fayetteville and Bryce Brewer of Little Rock.
